All black holes, regardless of mass, launch jets when their accretion rate falls to roughly 2% of the Eddington limit, an international team co-led by Andrew Mummery and Adelle Goodwin reports in Nature Astronomy.[3] The finding, published Sept. 21, gives astrophysicists a single rule for an event that had appeared to depend on a hole's size and environment.[4] Separately, a University of Maryland-led study in the same journal finds that even the most catastrophic cosmic collisions may not destroy the hidden liquid oceans inside ice moons.[1] The result, filed by Media Indonesia on Sept. 22, suggests a stable target for missions hunting water and habitability beyond Earth.[2] The two papers are unrelated, but together they sharpen the map of where life could hide and how the universe vents energy. Both studies are based on modeling, not new observations, so their predictions will face spacecraft and telescope checks in the years ahead.
