Humans have left nearly 500,000 pounds of material on the surface of the Moon to date. Most of this mass is discarded government landers and inactive spacecraft.^[1] There is currently no law regulating what may be placed on the Moon, according to former NASA attorney and Georgetown space law professor Steve Mirmina. Mirmina warned that exhaust from descending craft kicks up rock and dust which becomes permanent hazardous shrapnel for all future lunar missions.^[2]^[4] In 2023, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren wrote to NASA requesting the agency stop sending human remains to the Moon, citing desecration of sacred space.^[3]
