Richard Spolzino’s team at NASA Langley Research Center is identifying critical knowledge gaps for planned lunar and Mars base missions.[1] The team documented 25 gaps last year. It is on track to catalogue 60 total gaps by the end of 2026.[2] Spolzino has stated NASA does not hold all pre-existing answers for lunar operations, and relies on staff resolving unknowns during active work.[4] The team has also supported Voyager with downlink prioritisation for the upcoming Griffin-1 lunar lander.[3] NASA intends to deploy permanent lunar shelters as part of its durable base programme.[5] A monitoring station at the lunar south pole will track micrometeoroids, volatiles and seismic activity to assess risks for crews and hardware.[6] Nicky Fox, Associate Administrator for Mission Science, has said this work will deliver vital information required to survive the lunar environment.[7]
