The Mercury Planetary Orbiter and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter are scheduled to enter orbit around Mercury on November 21, 2026.[^6] They are the two spacecraft of BepiColombo, a joint mission of ESA and JAXA, and the first to orbit Mercury with two spacecraft simultaneously.[^5]

The composite spacecraft traveled over 10 billion kilometers, or 6 billion miles, and required nine planetary flybys to reduce their energy enough to be captured by Mercury's orbit.[^1] The last flyby occurred in January 2025.[^3] BepiColombo launched in October 2018.[^8][^10]

If successful, the two spacecraft will separate from each other in December to map and study the planet from different altitudes.[^2] The Mercury Planetary Orbiter is currently charging the spacecraft's batteries using its solar panels.[^7] Mio will study the planet's magnetosphere from a higher altitude, while the MPO will examine the surface and atmosphere.

Mercury has been explored before. NASA's Mariner 10 flew past the planet three times in 1974 and 1975, the first spacecraft to reach it. NASA's MESSENGER entered orbit in 2011 and mapped the surface until 2015.[^9]

Reaching Mercury requires the spacecraft to slow down against the Sun's gravity, which is why the flybys were needed. The planet is close to the Sun, and its surface heats the instruments during the operations.
