NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman telescope from Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.[1] The telescope has a planned primary mission duration of five years, with an option for extension.[4] NASA has advanced extraterrestrial weather forecasting research using the James Webb Space Telescope.[2] Separately, the observatory detected thermal variations and cloud formations on brown dwarf SIMP 0136, located 20 light years from Earth.[3] University of Arizona astronomers published research in Nature Astronomy on 2026-09-24 finding heavy elements existed 500 million years after the Big Bang.[6] The James Webb Space Telescope collected 30 hours of exposure data for this study of 13 billion year old galaxy light.[5]
