The joint European Space Agency and Chinese Academy of Sciences Solar Wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer mission has officially begun scientific operations.[^2]

SMILE launched 19 May aboard a Vega-C rocket from Kourou, French Guiana. It arrived in its planned highly elliptical orbit on 20 June, after which teams completed a multi-month commissioning period.[^1]

The primary mission is expected to last three years. Extensions may be approved provided the spacecraft remains in good health.[^3]
