The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics to Francis Halzen. [1] Halzen is a Belgian physicist born 1944. The prize recognises decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin. [2] IceCube is a 1 cubic kilometre facility, with 5000 sensors buried 2000 metres deep in Antarctic ice. [3] The observatory uses embedded optical sensors to detect neutrino particle interactions. It allows researchers to register neutrinos originating from high-energy processes in deep space. [4] Space Nugget. Antarctica hosts multiple international astronomical observatories. The continent is selected for this work due to its stable dry atmosphere and long winter darkness.
