New 222-metre lunar crater spotted by LRO image analyst

Robert Wagner of Intuitive Machines found the McGetchin crater on routine Moon-map check, three times larger than any impact site catalogued by the orbiter in the past decade.

A routine quality check of Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter images has turned up a 222-metre-wide impact crater on the Moon, the largest fresh crater catalogued by the spacecraft in ten years. [2] [8] The crater, named after the late Thomas McGetchin, former director of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, was spotted on 2025-10-24 by Robert Wagner, an image-processing specialist at Intuitive Machines who works with the LRO Camera system. [2] Wagner noticed a bright spot with a dark halo on a Moon map that had not been there before. [2] Researchers believe the impact occurred between 2024-04-11 and 2024-05-22, when a comet or asteroid fragment the size of a three- to six-storey building struck the lunar surface.
