USRA announced on Sept. 18 that it contributed planetary science expertise, lunar dataset development and scientific evaluation to the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model, an open-source AI model for analyzing lunar mission data.[^1]

The model has already demonstrated its accuracy. It correctly recognized a newly formed lunar crater on the first attempt when a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket crashed into the Moon on Aug. 5, even though the new crater overlapped with an existing one.[^4]

Separately, researchers have been cataloging new craters. A crater named McGetchin, after pioneering lunar scientist Tom McGetchin, formed between April 11 and May 22, 2024, when an asteroid or comet about the size of a three- to six-story building struck the Moon.[^7] The impact hit the eastern edge of the Moon.[^3] Robert Wagner, an image-processing specialist from Intuitive Machines working with NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera system, identified the crater while examining a large map of the Moon on Oct. 24, 2025.[^6] Impacts of this magnitude happen on the Moon about once in a century or even longer.[^8]
