NASA discovers crater McGetchin, largest recent impact crater on Moon

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted the new crater, named McGetchin, inside the Crisium basin on the Moon's eastern near side.

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has discovered a new crater on the Moon named McGetchin, the largest recent impact crater found there.[6] Robert Wagner, an image processing specialist with the orbiter's mission, spotted it while scanning a giant moon map on his computer screen.[4] The spacecraft has been orbiting the Moon for about 17 years.[5] McGetchin lies at 1.3536 degrees north, 67.1765 degrees east on the eastern near side, inside the outer ring of the Crisium basin, 330 kilometres from the edge of Mare Crisium.[1] It is named after Tom McGetchin, a pioneer lunar scientist. The previous record for a recent impact crater measured about 70 meters across.[6]
