Researchers identified a new crater on the Moon formed by an impact in 2024, using imagery from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.^[3] The crater is 222 meters wide and 43 meters deep, identified with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera, according to a study published in Science Advances.^[6] Researchers said an asteroid or comet fragment striking the lunar surface formed it about two years ago.^[4] Separately, NASA has deployed advanced AI models on 17 years of orbital observation data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has orbited the Moon since 2009, as part of preparations for the Artemis program.^[7]
